These are results from one of our patients, showing the powerful impacts that neurofeedback can have on recovery of cognitive function following a brain injury. This particular patient sustained a traumatic brain injury during an auto accident, and suffered a lot of different impairments as a result, both physical and mental. One way that we measure progress during treatment is to assess cognitive function using a computerized test called CNS Vital Signs, which measures many different aspects of cognitive function. For this patient, she showed quite a few areas for growth when we tested her at baseline – her overall function was low, meaning she showed moderate impairment, and out of fifteen subtests, only four were in the normal range (eleven were impaired), and some showed as severely impaired. Fast forward to a few months later, following twenty sessions of neurofeedback, as well as some photobiomodulation treatment, she showed remarkable improvement – now only two of the fifteen subtests showed any impairment, and none of them were severely impaired! I think the biggest impact, though, was how encouraged she was when she saw those results, telling me, “Now no one can call me stupid anymore!”. It was a bit heartbreaking to think of folks talking down to her as she struggled with her recovery, but it was every bit as thrilling to see the progress she had made as a result of our work with her, and the ways we were able to help her get her confidence back. Neurofeedback really does have the power to change lives!
